The gradual threshold model of ambivalence: relating the positive and negative bases of attitudes to subjective ambivalence.

چکیده
This research examined the relationship between the measured (Study 1) and manipulated (Studies 2 and 3) positive and negative bases of attitudes and the psychological experience of attitudinal ambivalence. On the basis of these studies, the gradual threshold model of ambivalence (GTM) was advanced. The GTM holds that: (a) ambivalence increases in a negatively accelerating manner as the number of conflicting reactions (whichever of the positive or negative reactions are fewer in number) increases, (b) ambivalence is a negative function of the extent of dominant reactions, and (c) as the number of conflicting reactions increases, the impact of dominant reactions on ambivalence gradually decreases such that at some level of conflicting reactions (i.e, the threshold), the number of dominant reactions no longer has an impact on subjective ambivalence.

Reducing Subjective Ambivalence by Creating Doubt: A Metacognitive Approach
Ambivalence, the presence of positive and negative reactions toward an object, typically involves the subjective experience of conflict. We investigate the role that the perceived validity of each side of an ambivalent attitude plays in producing subjective ambivalence (SA). Consistent with the metacognitive model of attitudes, we demonstrated that SA is reduced when people doubt either the pos...
متن کاملValence asymmetries in attitude ambivalence.
Existing models of ambivalence suggest that as the number of conflicting reactions (e.g., attitude components) increases, so too does the experience of ambivalence. Interestingly, though, these models overwhelmingly assume that this relationship is independent of valence. Across 3 studies we observe that this effect is in fact heavily influenced by 2 established valence asymmetries: positivity ...
متن کاملWanting other attitudes: Actual–desired attitude discrepancies predict feelings of ambivalence and ambivalence consequences
• People can desire attitudes that differ in valence from their current attitude. • Actual–desired discrepancies lead people to feel ambivalent. • Discrepancies also reduce prediction of behavior and increase information interest. a b s t r a c t a r t i c l e i n f o The experience of attitudinal ambivalence (subjective ambivalence) is important because it predicts key consequences of attitude...
متن کاملAttitudes towards following meat, vegetarian and vegan diets: an examination of the role of ambivalence.
Vegetarianism within the U.K. is growing in popularity, with the current estimate of 7% of the population eating a vegetarian diet. This study examined differences between the attitudes and beliefs of four dietary groups (meat eaters, meat avoiders, vegetarians and vegans) and the extent to which attitudes influenced intentions to follow each diet. In addition, the role of attitudinal ambivalen...
متن کاملWhence Univalent Ambivalence? From the Anticipation of Conflicting Reactions
The subjective experience of ambivalence results from possessing both positive and negative reactions. Why do individuals sometimes experience ambivalence when they possess only positive or only negative reactions (i.e., univalent attitudes)? This research advances and provides support for the notion that anticipated conflicting reactions underlie such ambivalence. Anticipated conflicting react...
